Marriage CertificatesThere has long been confusion between marriage licenses and marriage certificates. Marriage licenses are, essentially permission granted by the state or county to marry a specific person. Marriage certificates are proof that a valid marriage ceremony has taken place. Most states require that marriage certificates are signed by both parties, one or two witnesses and an officiator.
In order for a bride to legally change her name, to apply for an updated passport or identification, or to change financial accounts, she will need proof of marriage. This is what a marriage certificates provide for. Many newlyweds, however, do not receive a certified copy of this automatically. If you need a certified copy of your marriage certificate, find the address of the Bureau of Vital Statistics of the state you were wed in from the list below and request a copy.
